Shahid – (1970-1989)

Shahid is one of those actors who made his presence felt in a big way in a short period of time, establishing himself rapidly as a major force. He started his movie career at a stage when Mohammad Ali, Waheed Murad and Nadeem were dominating the Urdu film scene but despite hat he was able to forge ahead which is testament to his popularity. Shahid was not only a very capable performer but his physique and masculinity made him the favourite of female audiences especially. After Waheed Murad, Shahid was the hero they flocked to see most of all.

Shahid was introduced by Filmmaker Abbas Nosha in his film “Aik Raat” opposite Deeba in 1970. As it happens “Shama” Magazine published a poster of Shahid with Deeba resulting in his becoming an instant overnight hit even before the release of his first film. Although “Aik Raat” was his first project, he had already signed a dozen more before its release. However, the first movie released with Shahid in a major role was K. Khursheed’s “Neend Hamari Khwab Tumhare” starring Waheed Murad and Deeba. It was an instant hit followed by superhits like Aansoo, Tehzeeb, Ghairat Te Qanoon, Aik Raat, Umrao Jaan Ada, Zeenat, Tere Mere Sapne, Talaq, Uff Yeh Beewian and Shabana.

This was a time of great success for him, coupled with good looks and popularity, he was to be seen with all the top actresses of that time. His Scandals with Firdous, Sangeeta, Zamurrad, Babra Sharif and Ishrat Chaudhary were making headlines every day. Shahid’s immaturity, his excesses and his indulgences soon caught up with him and led to his demise in the film industry. He lost interest in his work and left behind incomplete projects, settling abroad.

Though only for a relatively short span of time in Lollywood, Shahid appeared in no less than 165 films. His on-screen casting with Rani, Shabnam, Nisho, Sangeeta, Aasia and Babra Sharif were especially loved by audiences. He was cast opposite Rani in more films than any other actress. Shahid managed to win two Nigar Awards in his short career; one for Deedar and a second one for his role in the hugely successful Shabana.
Shahid has decided to return to film after an age and has promised producers that he will be on his best behaviour. It remains to be seen how he will fare in coming months but some producers have even cast him as a hero in their forthcoming productions.
